Naturopathic Medicine

Overview:

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of primary health care - an art, science, philosophy and practice of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of illness. Naturopathic medicine is distinguished by the principles which underlie and determine its practice. These principles are based upon the objective observation of the nature of health and disease, and are continually reexamined in the light of scientific advances. Methods used are consistent with these principles and are chosen upon the basis of patient individuality. Naturopathic physicians are trained as primary health care physicians whose diverse techniques include modern and traditional, scientific and empirical methods. The following principles are the foundation for the practice of naturopathic medicine:

Naturopathic Medicine Principles:

The Healing Power of Nature

The healing power of nature is the inherent self -organizing and healing process of living systems which establishes, maintains and restores health. Naturopathic medicine recognizes this healing process to be ordered and intelligent. It is the naturopathic physician's role to support, facilitate and augment this process by identifying and removing obstacles to health and recovery, and by supporting the creation of a healthy internal and external environment.

Identify and Treat the Causes

Illness does not occur without cause. Causes may originate in many areas. Underlying causes of illness and disease must be identified and removed before complete recovery can occur. Symptoms can be expressions of the body's attempt to defend itself, to adapt and recover, to heal itself, or may be results of the causes of disease. The naturopathic physician seeks to treat the causes of disease, rather than to merely eliminate or suppress symptoms.

First Do No Harm

Naturopathic physicians follow three precepts to avoid harming the patient:
• Naturopathic physicians utilize methods and medicinal substances which minimize the risk of harmful effects, and apply the least possible force or intervention necessary to diagnose illness and restore health.
• Whenever possible the suppression of symptoms is avoided as suppression generally interferes with the healing process.
• Naturopathic physicians respect and work with the vis medicatrix naturae in diagnosis, treatment and counseling, for if this self -healing process is not respected the patient may be harmed.

Doctor as Teacher

The original meaning of the word "doctor" is teacher. A principal objective of naturopathic medicine is to educate the patient and emphasize self-responsibility for health. Naturopathic physicians also recognize and employ the therapeutic potential of the doctor-patient relationship.

Treat the Whole Person

Health and disease result from a complex of physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, social and other factors. Since total health also includes spiritual health, naturopathic physicians encourage individuals to pursue their personal spiritual development. Naturopathic medicine recognizes the harmonious functioning of all aspects of the individual as being essential to health. The multifactorial nature of health and disease requires a personalized and comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment. Naturopathic physicians treat the whole person, taking all of these factors into account.

Prevention

Naturopathic medical colleges emphasize the study of health as well as disease. The prevention of disease and the attainment of optimal health in patients are primary objectives of naturopathic medicine. In practice, these objectives are accomplished through education and the promotion of healthy ways of living.

Naturopathic physicians assess risk factors, heredity and susceptibility to disease, and make appropriate interventions in partnership with their patients to prevent illness. Naturopathic medicine asserts that one cannot be healthy in an unhealthy environment and is committed to the creation of a world in which humanity may thrive.

Practice

Naturopathic Methods

Naturopathic medicine is defined primarily by its fundamental principles. Methods and modalities are selected and applied based upon these principles in relationship to the individual needs of each patient. Diagnostic and therapeutic methods are selected from various sources and systems and will continue to evolve with the progress of knowledge.

Naturopathic Practice

Naturopathic practice includes the following diagnostic and treatment modalities: utilization of all methods of clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing including diagnostic radiology and other imaging techniques; nutritional medicine, dietetics and therapeutic fasting; medicines of mineral, animal and botanical origin; hygiene and public health measures; naturopathic physical medicine including naturopathic manipulative therapies; the use of water, heat, cold, light, electricity, air, earth, electromagnetic and mechanical devices, ultrasound, and therapeutic exercise; homeopathy; psychotherapy and counseling; acupuncture, injection and intravenous therapy; minor surgery; prescription medication; and naturopathic obstetrics (natural childbirth).

Family Life Chiropractic

Welcome to Michelle LeBlanc Chiropractic

Family Life Chiropractic, Tucson, AZ image

Chiropractic care can bring relief to patients who have previously been living in pain, without the harmful effects of drugs or surgery.   People living with symptoms do not enjoy the same quality of life that those who live symptom-free do. My ultimate goal is to restore your health and help you regain a pain free, active lifestyle as quickly as possible.

I promote a holistic approach to health and wellness.  I will discuss your current problems and health concerns as well as explain how I might help using a variety of methods including the natural healing techniques incorporated in chiropractic care.  Specific techniques used include Diversified, Activator, Thompson, and Leander.

About Michelle LeBlanc, DC

I grew up in Hawthorne, California, city of the Beach Boys, in the southern part of Los Angeles County.  I graduated from Cleveland Chiropractic College, Los Angeles in 1995.  Having a strong interest in sports medicine, I took an extra year in sports injury training which is a lot of extremity work and therapy work.

Since then, I have had extensive experience here in Tucson, first in a very busy MD/DC clinic and then several years at another local Chiropractic office. I started with Family Life Chiropractic in 2008.

I do Diversified, Activator, Thompson, and Leander techniques but try to specify my treatment types to each individual patient and their personality and needs.  Not every body works the same with every treatment or therapy.  Additionally, since I was a physical therapy major before I switched to chiropractic,  I utilize a lot of therapy modalities in my treatment when needed.

TREATMENT DESCRIPTION

Acupuncture:

The theory is that the Qi flows through the body in a certain order and if that order is disrupted then disorders begin such as pain or illness.  Tiny, hair thin needles are placed on the body to balance your natural energy.  The needles are single use and sterile for each person.

TuiNa:

A specific manual method of moving QI and body fluids that resembles massage.

Herbal Medicine:

The use of herbs and common plant or animal products has been used for millennia.  Herbs are used for specific reasons and treat the root cause of the disorder and disharmony.  They are commonly combined because of different therapeutic effects and their synergy when used together.

Auricular Medicine:

Many point locations are on the ear and can be used to treat many ailments.  Ear seeds, ear tacks or needles may be placed on certain points in order for the patient to continue treatment after leaving the clinic.  Commonly used for substance abuse, weight loss and pain syndromes.

Acupuncture - Oriental Medicine - Tuina

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is often thought of as a new alternative therapy.  In reality it has been in successful practice for over 5,000 years.

Acupuncture works thru the insertion of very fine needles into points on the body.  This signals the body influencing physiological functions.  These points are found on meridians that carry life force or Qi throughout the body.   Qi influences and assists all essential life activities.   The body is then called upon to use its innate ability to heal itself on the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical aspects of life.

Oriental Medicine

Herbs are a very important part of Oriental Medicine.  Herbs nourish the system to keep balance and harmony.  There are wonderful herbal products that are made with integrity and currently exceed the international GMP standards.  Using regional plants provides optimum synergy with the environment around us.

Tuina

Tuina (Tui Na) is a form of medical massage.  When hands-on treatment is needed Tuina is used to help move the energy and open an avenue for optimum healing.

Jennifer’s Philosophy

My approach to patient care incorporates a gentle acupuncture technique partnered with compassion and a strong belief in patient education. In addition to their acupuncture treatment, Jennifer encourages her patients to make lifestyle choices that support their optimal health, such as practicing tai chi, yoga, qi gong, or other meditation and exercise; maintaining healthy nutrition, including vitamin and herbal supplementation when appropriate; and being involved in the community.

I believe that health is a manifestation of balance, both within the body itself and between the body and the external environment. When the body is internally balanced and in harmony with the external environment, energy flows smoothly throughout to nourish all organs and tissues. By adjusting and stimulating the flow of energy through acupuncture, I stimulate the body's natural healing ability to maintain health and protect against disease.

Balanced Bodies Massage Modalities:

  • Swedish
  • Deep Tissue
  • Neuromuscular
  • Trigger  Point
  • Muscle Energy
  • Myofascial
  • PreNatal
  • Sports

Sample Descriptions of  Massage Modalities:

Swedish Massage

The most widely recognized and commonly used category of massage.  Swedish includes a combination of long gliding (effleurage), kneading (petrissage), tapotement (percussion), and friction strokes applied to the superficial tissues (skin, muscle, tendon, ligament, fascia) of the body. These strokes are often combined with active and passive movements to create a fluid, relaxing, circulatory-enhancing treatment.

Deep Tissue

Intended to affect the deeper tissues within the body. There is a misconception that “deep” means “hard” and/or painful. After gentle warming of the superficial tissues with Swedish strokes or heat, the deep tissues can be affected with minimal energy and very little pressure. The client is actively involved with deep breathing and feedback during the treatment.

Sports Massage

Sports massage is a general term that refers to massage for athletes, and it uses the basic massage strokes and therapeutic techniques. One of the best ways for athletes of all levels to avoid muscular pain and discomfort is to incorporate sports massage into their routine. Massage therapy can provide many benefits to athletes of all levels.

Massage Therapy Testimonial I have been lucky enough to have massages all over the world and there is not a better therapist anywhere than Melissa.  She is excellent, and has found “issues” I didn’t even know I had.  I have chronic hamstring and hip tightness and every time I spend an hour with Melissa, I feel 100% better when I walk out the door.  I would recommend her equally to anyone who simply wants an hour of “me” time, or needs an hour of more intense, deep tissue massage.
